Just bought Desert Scores yesterday in Carbon, the best record I've bought in ages (well since I bought Curtis Mayfield's debut album anyway!). Broken 3/4 techno. Maaaaaaan. The jazz techno waltz. Here to stay. Already looking to buy more stuff. All I'd heard before I bought this record was the Days To Come remix and a damn good reputation; now I've seem for myself. Class. How had I not heard this stuff before? Eoghan (eoghan_uk@hotmail.com) London, - Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at 06:37:56 (PST) Hello! I heard a rumor that a new full length was in the works and was hoping to try, as I may, to convince you to give us a taste on your site. Also, do you plan on any retrospective releases? I would love to be able to have a chance to hear some of your more obscure, harder to find work. Cheers and best wishes. I just picked up your remix of Jazzanova's "Days..." and all I can say is that I'm really more impressed with your take on music every time I hear your records. I wanted to say something earlier, when you released "A History..." but wasn't sure where to post. Congratulations, your body of work is quite an accomplishment. If at all possible, please let me know if there's any point at which you'll be making your way through the midwestern U.S., particularly Chicago or Detroit. It would definitely be a pleasure to hear you in person. Peace and continued success. Adam Agosto (vinnievdevicci@yahoo.com) Beer City, WI U.S.A. - Monday, February 10, 2003 at 17:29:43 (PST) Hello Ian, I was looking for songs for Cowboy Bebop when I came across your remix for Piano Black. Not thinking too much about it, i downloaded it, seeing as how most songs for Cowboy Bebop are superb, and when I listened to it....damn, THIS is the kind of music that ive been looking for ever since the I was about 8. My dad brought me up into Jazz. Soon after I went into Smooth Jazz, and then Techno. As I explored these catagories individually, the more then seemed to be missing something. If the techno didnt have the sending melody of Jazz, then the Jazz didnt have the itchy emotion of Techno. Then those songs such as Monkey Jazz and Piano Black Remix, (wich im listening to right now)wich are PERFECT in EVERY way that music can bring bliss to ones afternoon or evening. I have yet to listen to all your songs Ian, but so far I can honestly say I havnt found ONE I DONT like. Unlike an artists CD of 23 that Ill purchase just for 2 or 3 songs. No, this "Tech-Jazz" is the "revelation" of my happiness that I have only heard that music can do to one soul. And so I would like to thank you for introducing me into this new level of...."Zen" if you will...and wish you the best of fortune in the future, and god bless. I got your "Gigantic Days" for my birthday two month ago from a good friend of mine, and since then... I've been listening many of your albums. I'm involved in the music business up here, and understand how hard it is to get the records on the shelf outside of the artist's home country. But I still hope that all the discs become available in the States since they deserve it. Keep up the good work! I basically listen to techno, jazz and music from Japanese videogame/anime. So I'm really surprised when I knew your remix "Piano Black" from Cowboy Bebop. I thought "Oh, this is completely Ian's sound!" while listening. I want to know what did you think or feel when you listened to Yoko Kanno's music, please reply if you can. Just a quick note to say thanks for releasing 2 of the best jazzed up techno albums ever. I brought Desert Scores when it was released and from the first few seconds of Mad Mike Disease I knew it was going to be something special. I noticed there were no industry liggers in your guestbook, but that doesn't suprise me since aren't we all nothing more than soulless, parasitic megalomaniacs??!! But as you know, I like to buck a trend wherever I can, so by way of revealing my true colours, I come out of the closet as a real music fan. Collective Invention and Natural Knowledge - forget 4/4, 7/13 is the new four-to-the-floor! These are two of the finest pieces of electronic music I have ever heard. Thank you. "Monkey Jazz" is the most beautiful piece of electronic music ever made. Can't seem to get "Desert Scores" over here...will there be a european re-release? Been trying to order it at my record shop for ages. Think I'll have to go for the japanese re-release then.. One more thing...is Monkey Jazz available on vinyl? Cy Claude Young Glasgow, UK - Monday, February 12, 2001 at 00:37:11 (PST) Somedody on a dinner last week asked me : "who as contemporary music would you "destroy your kitchen for"? which is a flemish expression, meaning that "who's the upmost wicked music for you nowadays". I had one answer: "Ian O'Brien" denis dujardin (dujardin@pandora.be) Kortrijk, Flanders Belgium - Saturday, February 10, 2001 at 16:45:45 (PST) EZ Ian. Much love to you & yours for such wicked music and kind personnality. I just got my hands on the album, and I can't get enough. It gives me this kooky vibe every time I listen to it, like summer has just ended, the sun is setting earlier and everthing is just getting dreary. The upside is that the beat goes on. To Ian: Get your ass back in the GT studio soon! Rob Shankin (robshankin@adelpia.net) Burlington, Vt USA - Friday, February 09, 2001 at 08:59:09 (PST) hi ian . But... my cousin, who usually has a bad taste, is now, after listening to an Ian o' Brien's track, a hardcore Ian O'Brien fan, and I think that's some compliment. Taco (Herrdoppeldoktor@hotmail.com) Delft, Holland - Monday, January 29, 2001 at 08:14:55 (PST) nice site, just listened to the 'abstract funk theory'-compilation, why on earth was that claude young track never released? sounded a lot like the stuff on your 'desert scores' album which i liked A LOT! thanks for the great music, have fun tomorrow in a'dam! jurren (h1_t3ch_funk@hotmail.com) utreg, netherlands earth - Thursday, January 25, 2001 at 13:33:25 (PST) cool site. i enjoy your records and look forward to a visit down under, one day (hopefully). matt matthew (davmg001@students.unisa.edu.au) adelaide, south australia Australia - Monday, January 22, 2001 at 00:35:07 (PST) 'twas nice to see you in the IsaacButt in Dublin.
